How old does a child need to be to start Taekwondo?
At David Holler's Taekwondo we offer classes for children ages 5 and up.
|
Am I too old to try Taekwondo?
Your general health and your fitness goals may be more important than age alone
in deciding if a martial arts workout program is right for you. However, you do
not need to “get in shape first” or have a background in martial arts to start Taekwondo.
Our program is designed to help you gradually increase your fitness
level and martial arts skills, whether you already work out at a health club regularly
or never quite found the time to start exercising. At our school we have students
in our adult program ranging from their teens to those who started Taekwondo in
their 40’s and 50’s.

What do I wear?
When you enroll you are given the traditional white uniform. You wear this uniform
to class and other special events. Black pants and our Taekwondo School T-Shirts
may also be worn to class and these items are purchased at the center.
|
What if my child uses Taekwondo at home or at school?
Tell me IMMEDIATELY. While I understand that students can be a little over anxious
to share and show off, this can be dangerous. Please inform me as soon as possible
so that we can take steps to correct the situation.
|
What do the instructors expect from the students?
We expect our students to give their best effort. Technique at the early stages
of training is not as important as a positive attitude. If a student tries hard
and has a good attitude, they will develop better technique over time because they
are listening and learning.
|
How do I advance through the ranks?
One advances through a promotional testing. Testing is held every 8 weeks and you
only test if you know the material at your level.
|
What is testing?
Testing is a process where the instructors evaluate the skills of the student to
determine whether they are ready to progress to the next level of training. What
is required to pass testing increases as a student increases in rank. Students who
are black belts are expected to perform with greater precision and power than beginning
level students.
|
When will I need sparring gear?
Sparring gear is purchased at the center when you are testing for your orange belt.
Only approved sparring gear may be worn.
|
How do the children earn “stripes” in class?
Each stripe is earned in class for achieving a short term goal that breaks up the
requirements for advancement from one belt to the next. Generally the instructor
will ask the students if they would like to test for a stripe at the end of class
but the students may ask if they feel prepared.
|
How long does it take to become a Black Belt?
It is mathematically possible to become a Black Belt in two years. However, it often
takes longer to attain that rank. But remember, Black Belt is just the beginning,
not the end of the martial arts journey – there are more levels of Black Belt than
there are of color belts. A Black Belt indicates that the martial artist has now
become a dedicated student of Taekwondo, ready to begin serious training.
|
Are there tournaments?
We hold several regional tournaments a year. These are optional events and
are for all ages and ranks.
|
How much does Taekwondo cost?
The monthly fee is $99 for the first family member, $70 for the 2nd family member and $30 for each additional family member.
There are no enrollment fees, no contracts, and you may come to
class as often as you like.
|
What if I take a Break?
It is our policy that you the customer are under no contractual obligation to stay
in the program. The student is free to stop at any time. To reactivate membership
simply come to class and pay the monthly fee.
